It may not be right, it's just how I see it.MokoFeed2009-11-15T05:32:18+01:00tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-11-05:/2006/11/05/show_trial_of_justice~1296986/CitizenGale2006-11-05T10:24:47+01:002006-11-05T10:27:21+01:00 <p>Within the past 10 minutes Saddam Hussain has been sentenced to death for Crimes against Humanity for his part in the deaths of 48 people in the Dujail region of Iraq.</p> <p>Not really a suprise, even before Saddam was captured the Iraqi courts and the American Government were discussing his method death once he was brought to trial, so it seem something of a forgone conclusion that this sentence would be passed.</p> <p>Throughout the 40s and 50s the former USSR were decried for their show trials of rebels against the regime. So why is it to the wider world, the trial of Saddam is seen as just another show trial with an enevitable end?</p> <p>There is no doubt for the families of those who died in the Dujail massacare that justice has been done, but do the thousands of families of those victims who died in the Anzia (spelling?) massacare feel the same, if Saddam wasn't given the death sentence for this first trial then he would have gone onto face charges on this wider crime. So have these families had their justice?</p> <p>However the point in peoples minds has to be has the justice system been seen to work in a fair and impartial way or are we dealing with a country which will never know how to have a fair system of justice? For so long Saddam ruled in the manner he wished rather than to the rule of law and now the occupying forces are in control is justice actually being done or is it being done just for the conveniance the western world rather than the Iraqi people.</p> <p>There is no doubt however this verdict will see an increase in the insurgencey in Iraq wether its a tempory blip or a more long term one. Iraq is a country in turmoil and true justice can never really be done when there is no precident for it being done in the first place.</p> <p>To me these Saddam trial are up there with the Soviet Show Trials in their ludricacy and total lack of true justice. Some will say the paintings by Turner and Constable are art and yet others will say works created by Hurst and Hemming are art.<br> Regardless of which category you fall into most people would say that a picturesque view of the French countryside could be considered art in one form or another whether you actually liked it or not.<br> But would it cease to be art once you knew who the painter was? Would is cease to be art and become propaganda when you found out the artist was Adolf Hitler? And if you found yourself in possession of a work by Hitler what would you do with it?<br> This is a dilemma which has been raised this week as a series of works attributed to Hitler go in sale at an auction house in Cornwall.<br> Holocaust survivors have said the works should be destroyed because of the acts he authorised after the pictures were painted. But doesn’t destroying the pictures lower us to the levels of Hitler who ordered the mass burning of books and art which his regime didn’t agree with? Or are we just trying to forget a part of our history we need to remember in order to prevent it happening again.<br> It was telling yesterday when a interviewee in BBC Spotlight said: “We should just forget about him” Personally I would say no we shouldn’t forget about him, we need to remember everything he and his regime did in order to make sure it never happens again.<br> This is much of the problem we have in this world, we choose to forget and then in the process make the same mistakes as before and then wonder why it happened.<br> Remembering Hitler and the Nazis doesn’t need to be at the forefront of our minds 24/7, but it does need to be in mind when those times arise when we see atrocity happen once again, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Cambodia, Chile and the Sudan to name but a very few. History keeps repeating itself because we the human race turn a blind eye and forget about the last time. We have never learnt the lessons of the past.<br> So would you still buy a piece of art by Hitler? And would you even still consider it to be art regardless of who produced it in the first place?</p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/09/27/but_is_it_art~1166114/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-09-22:/2006/09/22/the_hamster_came_off_the_wheel~1151406/CitizenGale2006-09-22T19:49:41+02:002006-09-22T19:49:41+02:00 <p><strong>IT WAS</strong> in 1986 that I first fell in love, I was nine years old and still at primary school, but I knew from that day that it would be my destiny to drive that car.</p> <p>No it wasn’t someone in my class but the Porsche 911 a car that defined the 1980s, everything else about the decade could be easily detested if you came from a working class family, Thatcher preached greed while miners in Yorkshire and Wales were kicked out of their jobs in the name of progress, but the Porsche 911 was the car that made every man, woman and child want it, not need it just want it.</p> <p>A few people would go onto own their own 911, the rest of us just had to sit back look at it with envious eyes and just dream about what could be.</p> <p>It was partly because of the Porsche 911 that I wanted to become a journalist, I was asked to write a school report about the job I wanted to do when I grew up, I decided then and there I wanted to be a motoring journalist so I could drive my own 911. It kind of happened for a short while, I worked on a local newspaper in Devon before joining the prison service as an admin officer, but I have never really given up the dream and would still jump at the chance even now.</p> <p>But one man in particular has been living the dream of the motoring journalist, someone I am truly envious of.</p> <p>On Wednesday, Top Gear Presenter, Richard Hammond was involved in an accident which can only be described as horrendous, how he survived we will never know, however he did and he’s now recovering in Leeds General Infirmary. The Hamster as he has become known is the kind of motoring journalist who isn’t afraid to push the limits of what mankind can do in a car, in the past he has been zapped by millions of volts of lightening energy with only the safety of a VW to sit in, he has driven around race tracks at speeds which most of us would see that the colour of adrenalin is actually brown, this is a man who is living his dream and nearly paid with his life.</p> <p>It’s people like The Hamster that push mankind forward, without people like him we would still be stuck in the stone age looking like Clarkson thinking ‘Ooooh it’s comfortable in here’, the Hamster on the other hand thought: ‘Hmmm I wonder what’s over that hill and how fast I can get there?’ he is willing to take the risks most of us would shrink from, me included.</p> <p>But was the accident on Wednesday a step out of the cave too far? Not much you'll agree. But I guess you were a little more suprised when you found in the bag a Prison Service ID card and a key chain and tally, so in fact I guess you do know who I am.</p> <p>However the contents of the bag weren't important, dispite the bag being given to me by family in Canada I can even cope with that, but what I can't cope with is the fact you decided to take it upon yourself to vandalise my car which I work hard to pay for and steal something which you had no right to take in the first place.</p> <p>I am a forgiving person on the whole, but the one thing I cannot forgive is someone violating another persons rights to a peaceful and happy life. Last night you violated that my rights and you cannot be forgiven.</p> <p>As of this moment you owe me, my rucksack and its contents and £300 for a new window to replace the one you decided to smash, it's a small price to pay for the damage you've done.</p> <p>Your reasons for your theft are not important and you arn't important. They couldn't manage a piss up in a pub!<br><br><br></p> <p> </p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/08/17/the_big_stitch_up~1047789/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-08-02:/2006/08/02/incorruptable~1008669/CitizenGale2006-08-02T19:09:10+02:002006-08-02T19:09:10+02:00 <p>According to a 'study' being conducted by the Metropolitian Police and the Prison Service Professional Standards Unit, up to 1,000 members of prison staff are corrupt and helping get drugs, mobile phones and other contraband products into Prisons around England and Wales.</p> <p>Well yes we would be wrong to think that an organisation of the Prison Service size didn't have a few bad apples in the barrel and yes they should be found out and dealt with.</p> <p>But lets look at the life of a typical Prison Officer:</p> <p>After siz weeks training an new prison officer (known as POELTS) will be pushed out onto the wings of their new establishment and expected to do the job of friend, father/mother, employer, councillor, jailer, and foe all in one day.</p> <p>A prison officer can expect to bew verbally and physically abused, and depending on the type of prison you work in and the wing in which you work you can expect to be vomited upon and bled upon. </p> <p>You're the first on the scene when a prisoner cuts the wrists, tries to hang themselves or even succeeds in hanging themselves, YOUR the one cutting them down from the window bars and trying to save a life.</p> <p>You start work at 6am and some days don't finish until 9pm with only a lunch hour to keep you going. </p> <p>Your expected to keep good order and disipline while gaining the trust of prisoners.</p> <p>You're expected to meet key performance targets, keep up your paperwork and look after prisoners all at the same time.</p> <p>You're expected to continue your training in every aspect of the Prison Service while looking after prisoners.</p> <p>And your expected do to all this and more for just £17.500 per year...as the Police advertising says....'Could You?'</p> <p>And when you tell the public what you do the reaction you will normally get is 'Oooh that must be interesting', 'Oh I couldn't do that' or 'Is it anything like Bad Girls'</p> <p>The fact is people outside the Prison Service can never understand the conditions under which you work and the pressure under which you do it in.</p> <p>Corruption is wrong, and will always be wrong and those involved need to be rooted out, but before you judge a Prison Officer and ask if he's on the take, ask yourself this. Would YOU do the job under the present conditions of overcrowding, underfunding and pressure? Lovely image I know, but there you have it.</p> <p>I hate hot summer weather, there is just no getting away from it, give be the winter anytime where I can wrap up and sit snugly inside with a hot cup of Horlicks, snow on the ground and a bite in the air, nothing like it for clearing the sinus' and killing off the germs.</p> <p>The summer, just a chance for people who shouldn't take their clothes off to do so, old men to wear sandles with socks and small children to run around naked in parks paddling pools without their parents giving a thought to the fact that one of those 'pedos' they keep banging on about may just be watching their child.</p> <p>The weather, it brings the worst out in us Brits...the sooner the government abolish it the better. <img src="/img/smilies/graysigh.gif" alt=":**:" class="middle" border="0"> </p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/07/19/it_ain_t_half_hot_mum~972813/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-07-08:/2006/07/08/it_s_the_korean_war_but_not_as_we_know_i~943226/CitizenGale2006-07-08T12:36:58+02:002006-07-08T12:36:58+02:00 <p>55 years on and the Korean War is hotting up once again.</p> <p>The fact is the Korean War didn't end on 1952, both sides mearly decided to stop throwing bombs and bullets at each other and since an uneasy truce has laid over the region.</p> <p>The Korean War is one which facinates me, firstly my mother was born in Feburary 1952, so the war is as old as her and secondly I have a cousin currently living in the South.</p> <p>I would even like to visit both the north and the south to see for myself the effect the war had on the region and how the North has got away for so long living in isolation from the rest of the international community.</p> <p>However it dosen't seem that will not be happening any time soon as on July 4th (no coincidence it was Independence Day in the USA) the North Koreans fired seven missiles including their brand spanking new Taepedong - 2 long range missile which is apparently capable of reach as far as Alaska on to the east and Pakistan to the West (in other words quite a long way) </p> <p>There followed a few days of diplomacy, tough talk and nerves, with Japan setting in place sanctions against the regime, South Korea threatening sanctions and the USA threating harsher action.</p> <p>Now the USA seem to have put into place those harsh actions by sendinging their missiles to Japan in what many will see as a prepartion for war.</p> <p>Most will say the North Koreans have brought it upon themselves, which may well be true, but North Korea is a country that is like a five year old child...it dosen't like being ignored. So if you ignore it may well stamp, make threats to scream and scream until it's sick, but if you maintain your ground it will eventually calm down and then you can say, "Right now are you ready to talk like an adult"</p> <p>A simplistic analysis maybe, but perhaps if we think like a parents dealing with their children a little more often we might just come to a few solutions. </p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/07/08/it_s_the_korean_war_but_not_as_we_know_i~943226/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-07-01:/2006/07/01/surviving_the_fallout~924680/CitizenGale2006-07-01T09:19:59+02:002006-07-01T09:41:26+02:00 <p>Two days ago, Mr Justice Keith declared the Prison Service to be a place of 'endemic institional racism'</p> <p>It came in the wake of the enquiry into the death of asian teenager, <a href="http://www.zahidmubarekinquiry.org.uk/">Zahid Mubarek</a>, beaten to death in a racially motivated attack by his cell mate just hours before his release.</p> <p>The enquiry recommended a raft of changes which must take place within the service, many of which members of the service have been fighting for, for years and which for many years successive governments have ignored.</p> <p>There will be many recommendations the <a href="http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/">Prison Service</a> will be relutant to implement, but implement them they will because they will have to. But the biggest difficulty will come in the form of money, simply because of the fact the Government will not hand it over.</p> <p>Lets face it, at the moment the public are screaming out for harsher prison sentences for those who break the law, but my question is, <em>will they be willing to be their hands in THEIR pockets and help pay for it?</em>, somehow I think not.</p> <p>The true fact of the matter is that if we are to reform prisons within the guidelines of the enquiry YOU the great British public will have to pay for it. Every day they wear the same clothes and never talk to each other. Even this morning when I was running five minutes late the same couple in the same clothes, not talking to each other were walking through the main street on their usual walk.</p> <p>In their lives they're comfortable, happy may be a diffrent matter, but they are comfortable with their lot, unlike the BBC, who today decided to axe one of their flagship shows, Top of the Pops.</p> <p>Not having really been a fan it has made no real odds to me, but I still see the impact this has.</p> <p>For anyone over the age of 30 Top of the Pops was a rite of passage, if your parents allowed you to stay up beyond 7pm on a Thursday night to watch TOTP then you knew you had grown up. The prospect of seeing Pans People dancing set the imaginations of young boys wild while young girls had the chance to swoon over a young Noel Edmonds, Donny Osmond and the Status Quo. It was truely an essential part of any teenagers journey through hormonal hell to adulthood.</p> <p>But the culture of the download and 24-hour music TV has taken it's toll and the BBC have finally given into the pressure the programme no longer works and teenagers will get their music elsewhere.</p> <p>The first sign came when the Artic Monkey's hit the big time as the first download band, their music made it into the public forum through friends who uploaded the tracks onto the internet and allowed others from all over the world to download it and spread the world further. Then came the first number one from downloads only in the form of Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (which I may add has one of the mostly annoyingly catchy tunes of 2006). The writing was truely on the wall for the BBC and TOTP, no longer could itcould rely on the internet to get their songs known.</p> <p>Then there is the 24-hour music TV upserge. From just MTV in the 1980s you can now call on demand every genre of music on your TV. So cutting out the middle man and any music you don't like you can listen un-interupted, to Snoop Dogg all day if you wanted to and get the updated model of Pans People thrown into the bargain.</p> <p>So now the end of Top of the Pops is nigh will we see some other changes, will that Okehampton couple talk to each other, will they be just two minutes late one day and will the they ever wear anything diffrent from the long cardigan and and grey jumper.</p> <p>If Top of the Pops can change then they certinally can. </p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/06/21/the_times_they_are_a_changing~900759/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>tag:citizengale.blog.co.uk,2006-06-20:/2006/06/20/news_from_the_dprk~897793/CitizenGale2006-06-20T20:36:34+02:002006-06-20T20:36:34+02:00 <p>Today the Chief Constable of the Dyfed & Powys Police complained Government policy was being set by the tabloid press, with newspaper editors not just calling for but demanding that pedophiles be given harsher sentences and once they have been released should have their names avaliable to the public at large into the area in which they move via a 'Sarah's Law' (So called after the case of the eight-year old school girl Sarah Payne who was murdered in Sussex by known pedophile Roy Whitting), based on the law in the United States known as Megan's Law</p> <p>But even if UK Government policy is being driven by the tabloid press, we can be happy we don't like in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, more commonly known to you and me as North Korea.</p> <p>North Korea is a country known for it's secracy to the outside world, nothing gets in, nothing gets out without the highest people in the Government knowing about it. But it's a country which is also secrative to it's own people.</p> <p>Today in the western world the news broke that the DPRK was ready to test a long range missile capable of reaching a distance of 3.700 miles, or in more practical terms, the Alaskan coast, a state of the USA.</p> <p>However if you were a resident in downtown Pyongyang you're more likely to hear the story from your national newsagency, in fact the only official source of news in the DPRK, of a new medicinal water which is now on general sale. In the story it promises to: </p> <p><em>neutralizes poison by alcohol, chemical medicines, poisonous mushrooms, gas and pollution and increases the appetites.</em></p> <p>Not only that it will also: </p> <p><em>help(s) the growth and intellectual development of children, raises their immunity function, makes the elders full of vigor and prevents aging. </em></p> <p>In the UK the Trading Standards and BBC Watchdog would be onto this company for making such claims, it is afterall just a bottle of water. </p> <p>But this is the key to the DPRK, the Government have the most important means of control over it's people. Forget missiles, forget re-unification with the South. The single most important thing it has in its control is the media. </p> <p>If the media were to suddenly find its voice and start to speak out against the Government of Kim Jong Ill then the country would change, the people would start to find out for themselves what is really happening and rise up against it. So the DPRK need to keep the media firmly under its fist and make sure the news they want to get out, gets out. </p> <p>So the media is a classic case of catch 22, if it's too free it dictates to the government what it should do and if its held back on a leash the government dictates to it what it should print and therefore cover up the truth from the people.</p> <p>Is there a middle ground? </p> <p> <small> <a href="http://citizengale.blog.co.uk/2006/06/20/news_from_the_dprk~897793/#comments">Comments</a> </small> </p>
